Dear Dr. Do:

Thank you for your message via our embassy Web site for Ambassador Burghardt.  My office responded to several media queries about the reports by VNA and others, so Ambassador Burghardt has asked me to share with you the embassy's reaction to these reports.

Vietnamese press accounts of Ambassador Burghardt's March 15 meeting with Deputy Prime Minister Dung inaccurately portrayed some aspects of the ambassador's comments in the meeting.

Regarding the Vietnam Human Rights Act, the ambassador's comments to Deputy P.M. Dung reflected the fact that the administration has not taken a position on this legislation. He did not express opposition or support on behalf of the administration.

Sincerely,
